Flux was founded by Darrin Hallowell in 2002. Darrin attended the Art Institute of Chicago where he first started working in metals and sculpture. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree Darrin started casting wall and floor tiles in bronze and eventually developed a successful metal tile product that was distributed exclusively by Kohler Co.
In 2006 a Flux architect neighbor saw the metal sculpture Darrin was making in his fine art studio and asked if he would be willing to make make a custom steel sign for a client’s restaurant. Darrin made the sign, along with custom steel floor tiles, foot rails and various other metal fixtures for the restaurant. The architect came back with more work, and the metal fabrication moved into the Flux shop. Since then Flux has fabricated hundreds of successful metal projects. Darrin continues his fine art work and is represented in various private and public collections both locally and nationally.
In 2007 Flux received an Illinois Expansion and Modernization grant for their research into recycling local waste materials for their recycled tile and counter top products.
